30 years ago today something rare happened: people heard the same song at the same time all over the world and it all started from an idea a part-time Utah disc jockey acted on. Tracy Chapman figured if stations all over the world played “We Are the World” at the same time, enough awareness and record sales would make real change in the world and especially for those suffering from poverty in Africa. Tracy went to his then supervisor, “Gentleman” Jim Mickelson and together, along with local media, got the ball rolling and made something special happen. Something that has never been repeated.

This is how it all happened.
