Chances are that you’ve also been pronouncing its name wrong your entire life.
As the NES is re-born as the NES Classic and you start hearing the name again, you can now start pointing this out to others. According to the Japanese version of Wario Ware Gold, it turns out NES isn’t an acronym, but meant to be said as a word: “Ness”.
