Blake Shelton Was the Big Winner at Last Night’s “CMT Music Awards”

BLAKE SHELTON was the “big” winner at last night’s “CMT Music Awards”.  He picked up two trophies for “I’ll Name the Dogs”.  It won Video of the Year and Male Video of the Year.

He also performed on the roof of his Ole Red bar in Nashville.

CARRIE UNDERWOOD won Female Video of the Year for her collaboration with LUDACRIS on “The Champion”.  It was her record-setting 18th CMT award.

Some newbies stood out:  KANE BROWN and LAUREN ALAINA won Collaborative Video of the Year for “What Ifs”.  It was his first trophy.

CARLY PEARCE was in tears accepting the Breakthrough Video of the Year award for “Every Little Thing”.  And she ended it perfectly, saying, “To the guy that broke my heart.  Thank you.”  (Obviously, he inspired the song.)

As far as the show, unfortunately, it opened with a lame Royal Wedding spoof.  Maybe they were trying to ease in LITTLE BIG TOWN on their first year hosting.  Next year give them a monologue and see what happens, they’ll be fine.

Because the CMTs are held in the summer they love going to the outside stage.  I did enjoy CHRIS STAPLETON singing “Millionaire”, but LUKE BRYAN’s “Sunrise, Sunburn, Sunset” didn’t work for me.

SAM HUNT started his “Downtown’s Dead” from inside a downtown bar, naturally.  And then he took it outside and ducked into a few others before ending up on the big stage.  It was gimmicky, but I liked it.  Made me want to be in . . . downtown Nashville.

DIERKS BENTLEY performed in front of real flames while doing “Burning Man”.  He was joined by his Mountain High Tour opening act, BROTHERS OSBORNE.

You know how award shows can get a little boring?  That’s when you have Carrie Underwood blow the roof off the place with “Cry Pretty”.  And later, when the energy dips again, let KELLY CLARKSON show you a real “American Woman”.

This year’s big finish brought Darius RuckerJason AldeanCharles Kelley and Luke Bryan together to perform “Straight to Hell”.  It’s from Darius’s album, “When Was the Last Time”, and it’s classic country.
